Awareness Camp
Observation of World Environment Day

HOPE observed the World Environment Day on 05.06.2001 under the "Clean & Green" project. A tree planting function was held in the Premises Durgha Bhai Deshmukh General Hospital & Research Centre, Andhra Mahila Sabha Chennai, Indian Medical Association, Chennai South and Lioness' Club of Viswa Seva were associated with the project and were represented by Dr.Nanjunda Rao, Chairman, DDGH & RC and IMA (CS), Dr.Ms.Thajunisha, MO, DDG and Lns.Sashikala, President, Lioness Club of Viswa Seva. Mr.Veera, President Mr.Ram Kumar, Secretary, Mr.Natarajan, AO and Mr.Gnanamuttu, Former Environment Officer Tamil Nadu, Pollution Control Board were the other dignitaries present.

Environmental Pollution Awareness Programs

HOPE as a responsible NGO joined the mainstream of other like-minded organizations to create awareness of Environmental Pollution in a big way.

On 11.09.2000, HOPE conducted an Environmental Pollution Awareness Campaign at Pollachi, in collaboration with the Lions' and Rotary Clubs of Pollachi Mr.Har Sahay Meena, Sub-collector of Pollachi was the Chief Guest Campaign started with a procession of Lions and Rotarians along with other NGOs and a large number of students from educational institutions. Placards and banners were displayed highlighting pollution by polythene carry bags. A public meeting was held in which speakers emphasized the importance of abolition of polythene carry bags and preservation of clean environment. Public response was tremendous.

The result of the campaign at Pollachi made the NGOs at Udumalpet to to clamor for a similar exercise at their town. HOPE fulfilled this demand on 30.10.2000. Again the Rotary and Lions Clubs joined hands with HOPE for the second campaign in the district. Again Mr.Har Sahay Meena, Sub-collector, Pollachi was the Chief Guest. The campaign started with a procession and ended with a public meeting. The peril posed by polythene carry bags to the environment and the importance of clean environment was propagated. The procession and meeting were well attended by Lions, Rotarians members of other NGOs, Students from schools, colleges and polytechnics and the public. The theme of the campaign was well received and the message reached the people loud and clear.


1. Pulse Polio Immunization Program:
Phase I & Phase II were conducted under the aegis of WHO and Rotary International. In Chennai City HOPE sponsored publicity and provided volunteers to man the immunization centers.

2. Measles Immunization Program:
HOPE collaborated with Montfort Community Development Society and D.D. General Hospital & Research Center, Andhra Mahila Sabha and conducted this program.

3. Child Labour Day Awareness Program:
HOPE collaborated with Montfort Community Development Society and Child Relief And You (CRY) and conducted this program.

4. Transit School:
HOPE in collaboration with Kaingkarya Social welfare Organization established for the children of quarry workers, providing education and preventing child labour. This is an on going project and the school is an adopted institution of HOPE.

5. Assistance to Orphanages:
HOPE grants financial assistance to orphanages for their maintenance on regular basis besides donations in kind. The recipients include Kakkum Karangal Chennai, Government Orphanage Erode, Prema Samajam, Vishakapatnam and Good Life Center, Tambaram.

6. Kargil Relief Fund:
HOPE was the first NGO come forward and hand over the Kargil relief fund to our then Chief Minister Kalingnar Dr. M. Karunanidhi.

7. Orissa Cyclone Relief Work:
HOPE collected and sent about 50, bundles of clothes and utensils to the victims through the Red Cross Society of India, Tamil Nadu Branch.

8. Sponsorship of Seminars:
HOPE sponsored a symposium on Youth organized by Yuva Sakthi and also an Awareness Camp on Mental Retardation organized by Karunai Trust, both NGOs.

9. Medical Clinic:
Free Weekly Medical Clinic was inaugurated by HOPE at Kottivakkam Kuppam in collaboration with School of Nursing, D.D. General Hospital & Research centre, Andhra Mahila Sabha, Chennai. Subsequently the clinic was shifted to HOPE office to cater to the residents of Palavakkam Kuppam and Palkalai Nagar also. This is an on going project.

10. Eye Camp:
HOPE conducted Free Eye Camp in collaboration with Aswatha Eye Clinic, D.D. General Hospital & Research Center, Andhra Mahila Sabha, Chennai at Kottivakkam. Free spectacles were provided to needy patients. Follow up cases were referred to Aswatha Clinic.

11. World Women's Day:
HOPE sponsored the Free Medical Camp conducted by D.D. General Hospital & Research center, Andhra Mahila Sabha, Chennai to commemorate the World Women's Day. This camp was exclusively for women and children and a record number of patients benefited.

12. Adoption of Institutions:
HOPE has adopted Good Life Centre, Tambaram Home for Mentally Retarded Girls and Transit School. Thirisoolam, for children of quarry workers for special grants.

13. Environmental Pollution Campaign:
HOPE conducted Environmental Pollution Awareness campaigns at Pollachi and Udumalpet in collaboration with the Lions and Rotary Clubs of the towns. Educational Institutions and Government Departments participated.

14. Polio Surgical Camp:
HOPE Co-sponsored Bhagavan Mahaveer Free Polio Surgical Camp organized by Lions Club of Madras Leo City. Free diagnosis, treatment, orthopedic appliances, food, accommodation were provided to the patients.

15. Gujarat Earthquake Relief:
HOPE organized collection centers for Relief materials and sent them through the Red Cross Society, Tamil Nadu Branch. Cash donation was also sent to the Prime Minister's Relief Fund.

16. World Environment Day:
HOPE observed by tree planting or campaign. Saplings were planted in the premises under "Clean & Green" project in association with Indian Medical Association, Chennai South and Lioness Club of Viswaseva.

17. Swabhimaan (VTC):
HOPE Vocational Training Center for Mentally Retarded Adults was inaugurated in the premises. Accommodation and facilities are provided. Paper bags and candle making are done. Screen-printing and Plant nursery are planned for the future. Trainees are prepared for personality-development self-confidence and self-employment.
