HOPE observed World Environment Day on 05.06.2001 under the "Clean & Green" project. A tree planting function was held on the premises of Durgha Bhai Deshmukh General Hospital & Research Centre, Andhra Mahila Sabha, Chennai. Indian Medical Association, Chennai South, and the Lioness' Club of Viswa Seva were associated with the project and were represented by Dr. Nanjunda Rao, Chairman, DDGH & RC and IMA (CS), Dr. Ms. Thajunisha, MO, DDG, and Lns. Sashikala, President, Lioness Club of Viswa Seva. Mr. Veera (President), Mr. Ram Kumar (Secretary), Mr. Natarajan (AO) and Mr. Gnanamuttu (Former Environment Officer, Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board) were among the other dignitaries present.
HOPE, as a responsible NGO, joined the mainstream of other like-minded organizations to create awareness of environmental pollution in a big way.
On 11.09.2000, HOPE conducted an Environmental Pollution Awareness Campaign at Pollachi, in collaboration with the Lions' and Rotary Clubs of Pollachi. Mr. Har Sahay Meena, Sub-Collector of Pollachi, was the Chief Guest. The campaign started with a procession of Lions and Rotarians along with other NGOs and a large number of students from educational institutions. Placards and banners highlighted pollution caused by polythene carry bags. A public meeting followed, emphasizing the abolition of polythene carry bags and the preservation of a clean environment. Public response was tremendous.
The result of the Pollachi campaign led NGOs at Udumalpet to request a similar exercise for their town. HOPE fulfilled this demand on 30.10.2000, again with the Rotary and Lions Clubs joining hands. Mr. Har Sahay Meena was again the Chief Guest. The campaign started with a procession and ended with a public meeting well attended by Lions, Rotarians, members of other NGOs, students from schools, colleges and polytechnics, and the public. The message on the perils of polythene carry bags reached the people loud and clear.
